Which OWB is right for me?



Every day we are inboxed with all types of health, skin and beauty related questions which we do LOVE answering. The question, "which SkinFood should I choose for my skin type?" does however get raised most frequently. While there are subtle differences in our SkinFood formulations, there are distinct differences when it comes to the way in which they behave on your skin.



Face - Normal/Oily/Combination/Acne



Choose SkinFood Serum.

When I was in high school I continuously had pimples. I honestly can't remember a day when I had clear skin. I got into the habit of stripping my skin of oils with nasty supermarket bought cleansers, oil-free moisturisers, alcohol wipes and intense spot treatment creams. Little did I know I was making things worse. How? We all have sebaceous glands within our pores, these glands are responsible for producing sebum- the natural oil that appears on your skin. With not enough sebum our skin becomes dry and damaged, with too much sebum our skin becomes oily with an increased chance of break outs. If you intentionally remove all of your skins natural oil it sends a msg to your sebaceous glands to produce more to compensate for what you have removed. See the problem? The more you try to remove the oil, the more your sebaceous glands will create!



The ingredients Hemp and Jojoba in SkinFood Serum mimic sebum. When you apply SkinFood Serum you adequately hydrate your skin allowing your sebaceous glands to "take a holiday" and stop over producing sebum, thus helping to balance your skins natural oils. Furthermore, Jojoba Oil (actually a wax) is a transporting wax and helps move the other oils in SkinFood deeper into the pores where they are more effective. This is also why when you apply SkinFood Serum your skin doesn't appear to be oily. Hemp oil also acts as an anti-inflammatory, reduces redness and speeds up pimple recovery time. Manuka Oil is also in SkinFood Serum as it is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-pimple!!



Apply 3-4 drops of SkinFood Serum to clean skin both morning and night.



Increase good quality water intake and ditch the refined sugars (including bad carbs) and rancid trans fats (deep fried foods). Your mum was right, sugars do lead to pimples by aggravating two major causes of acne: hormones and inflammation. I'll expand on this in another post.

Choose Vegan SkinFood.



When we created Vegan SkinFood we did not realise that the addition of Shea Butter would force us to change the ratio of other oils which resulted in a highly effective treatment for dry skin. 3 years later and the best feedback we receive for treatment of dry, damaged skin is from SkinFoodies using Vegan SkinFood.



Let's talk about Shea Butter. We use fair trade Shea Butter from Ghana in our Vegan SkinFood. Ghana arguably has the best shea butter in the world because the nuts have the most desirable chemical balance, and the traditional processing methods create a very clean butter. Some traditional uses of shea butter include treatment of very dry skin, eczema, blemishes, skin discolorations, scars, stretch marks and wrinkles. It is also used as massage oil for babies and adults alike, and also a relaxer for stiff muscles due to it containing anti-inflammatory, emollient and humectant properties. We believe that our outstanding quality Shea Butter combined with coconut oil, hemp oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil and manuka oil in the correct ratios why our Vegan SkinFood is so highly effective when applied to dry, irritated and damaged skin.



When applying to the body make sure the skin is clean then apply liberally, keeping in mind that a little goes a very long way. Apply more (and more frequently) to eczema prone skin.

When applying to the face you'll only need half a pea size. For problem areas apply more. Don't worry, it wont block your pores!



Increase your intake of good quality fats from foods like fish (or high quality fish oil supplements), avocado, activated nuts (walnuts are great), flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds and spirulina. Increase good quality water intake and ditch the refined sugars (including bad carbs) and rancid trans fats (deep fried foods). Oh and don't scald yourself in the shower.. it drys out your skin. Try and keep the temperature just warm.





Body - Normal/Body Acne/Sun Burnt/Sun Damage



Choose Original SkinFood



This product really is our baby and where this whole SkinFood journey started. Still to this day, as someone with typically "normal" skin, this is my favourite formula for an every day moisturiser. No commercial cream can achieve the results that Original SkinFood can as an every day moisturiser which keeps skin feeling smooth and hydrated with an all year glow.



What blows my mind most is how quick and effective Original SkinFood is when applied to sunburn. While we are a huge advocate for sun exposure in the early AM and PM and do not recommend "baking" yourself, if by accident you find yourself a bit pink (or red), apply Original SkinFood after a shower and watch what happens by morning. Original SkinFood is a MUST if you're holidaying to a sunny destination. I also find that it helps maintain a healthy tan for longer and reduces the likelihood of a "blotchy tan".



For me, applying Original SkinFood morning and night is like a ceremonial ritual. There's nothing quite like taking a pea size amount, warming it in your hands and coating yourself in this translucent, nourishing balm. A pea size should cover an entire arm.. a little really goes go a long way. Every now and again (more through summer) I will apply Original SkinFood to my face before bed for a hit of hydration and I absolutely love how soft my skin feels in the morning.
